Food for thought
Did you know... All but one of the 114 surahs (chapters) of the Holy Quran begin with the words:
"In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful".
"Show gentleness, for if gentleness is found in anything, it beautifies it and when it is taken out from anything it damages it."
"Riches does not mean, having a great amount of property, but riches is self-contentment."
"Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well and that if they do wrong you will do wrong; but accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong if they do evil."
"There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart."
“Take advantage of five things before five others: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you become occupied, and your life before your death.”
“What is faith?” The prophet replied: “When a good deed becomes a source of pleasure for you and an evil deed becomes a source of disgust, then you are a believer.”
“If you want others to have what you want for yourself, you will be a Muslim”
I want to thank you so much for the book ... was exactly what I have been needing ...
... [This book] will be invaluable to me as I am doing a college report on the early history of Islam and educating myself on your culture and customs. I have already discovered that there is a great deal that I do not know and a great deal that I have been misinformed about, much to my shame as I consider myself well-educated ...
I love this book! ... It has a great format in that the reader can start just about anywhere in the book as their interests take them and get useful, solid information.
... After a while I felt the desire to know more, about this religion and I discovered this book. I found it very interesting and I read it two times....It's simple, but describes a lot of islamic's aspects and it's useful for muslims and non-muslims. ... I use this book to understand the [Quran's] concepts in a deeper way. So this book is useful ... Thank you very much for this book!
To be perfectly honest, Islam did not have any relevance in my life (though I have always believed in one supreme divine - GOD). And generally things which do not relate to your life are not of any value to you. This book has basically brought Islam to my everyday life. ...
Are you a teacher or professor?
While this book is accessible to the average reader (e.g. as a personal reading book), it has also been
used by teachers/professors in very diverse settings (secular and islamic learning centers, school and
college levels, islamic and non-religious courses) in the USA.
The Quran is the holy book of the Muslims. It is a very important part of Islam. Muslims believe that it is the exact word of God (in Arabic.) It has not been changed since its relevation over 1400 years ago. Popular English translations of the meaning include the Yusuf Ali, Muhammad Asad and Pickthall translations. (If you are interested in Islam, you should get a copy. You can find one at you local mosque or at a bookstore. If you use a bookstore, please make sure you use a reputable translation.) You can also check out this website that in addition to English translation of the meaning, also includes Arabic rectitation (please note that the correct term is recitation not singing.) Quran word by word
“Muslims would say that Islam is rooted in justice and compassion and that it categorically does NOT support the deliberate torture and/or oppression, and/or captivity and/or killing of innocent individuals. In fact, regardless of whether these actions are committed by governments, nations, groups, and/or individuals, such actions would simply be viewed as wrong –whoever did them..”
There was also a "Not in the name of Islam" petition signed by Muslims that protests the abuse of Muslim tenets by fringe groups. (Petition hyperlink is no longer active but it was signed by 689,000 people while it was active.) There is also a 2005 fatwa (religious prouncement/opinion) against targeting innocent people (e.g. terrorism) issued by a prominent Muslim American religious body reiterating a basic point in Islam. (British one here.)
