Surah al-Fathiha

(The Opening, Quran)

In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, the Beneficent, the Merciful: Owner of the day of judgment, You (alone) do we worship; You alone do we ask for help. Show us the straight path, the path of those whom You have favored; not (the path) of those who earn Your anger nor of those who go astray.

Note to Readers

The chapters are fairly independent of each other. Those pressed for time, or seeking a quick snapshot, may jump directly to the topics most interesting to them, after reading the first two chapters. The wide scope presented by the chapters is for the convenience of the reader, allowing one to easily find many disparate topics under “one roof”. While one should not feel obligated to finish the book in one reading, reading the book in sequence, in its entirety, is likely to be the smoothest and most fulfilling experience, with the least likelihood of misunderstandings.

Since this a collection of articles, different authors may have followed different styles and conventions. For example, Koran, Quran, Qu’ran, Qu’raan are all valid but different spellings of the Muslim Holy book. Typically in Muslim writings, abbreviations of respect such pbuh (peace be upon him) , raa, swt (subhanah wa ta’ala, glory be to Him in the Highest) follow the names of prophets, companions of the prophet, and God respectively. Since this interrupts the flow for first time non-Muslim readers they are omitted, but should be assumed to be present implicitly. Religious references typically refer to the Quran or collections of the sayings of prophet Muhammad. The pronoun “he” or “him” has been used occasionally in a gender neutral manner to avoid awkward he/she syntax.

Note: The topics selected for the chapters was primarily data-driven (e.g.what was important to readers).
